This Catheter Care Training course is designed to provide healthcare and social care staff with the knowledge and skills required to safely support individuals who use urinary catheters. The training covers the different types of catheters, their purpose, and the importance of maintaining catheter hygiene to reduce the risk of infection and complications.


​Participants will learn about catheter care procedures, infection prevention and control, recognising signs of catheter-related problems, maintaining dignity and comfort, and when to seek medical advice. The course also explores relevant legislation, policies, and best practice guidelines to ensure safe, person-centred care.


​By the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and types of urinary catheters.

  • Demonstrate good catheter care and hygiene practices.

  • Recognise signs of infection, blockage, leakage, and other complications.

  • Support individuals in maintaining comfort, dignity, and independence.

  • Record and report concerns appropriately in line with organisational policies.

  • Understand their role and responsibilities in providing safe catheter care.
